Everything You Need To Know About Dental Implants

Thinking about getting dental implants? They are a great way to restore both the look and function of your teeth and many people struggling with missing teeth often turn to this procedure.

But, you may also have a lot of questions regarding this procedure, in which case DentAllon Dentistry has prepared a short blog post that can help you learn everything you need about dental implants.

Check it out below and see if dental implants are right for you!

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a form of prosthetic made up of three elements:

  • Metal post
  • Abutment
  • Dental crown

Because of this structure, the dental implant will look and function just like a natural tooth. It’s a permanent procedure that can restore your full smile and oral health!

What Does the Procedure Look Like?

First, the dentist makes an incision in the gum line to insert the metal post. After this procedure heals, the abutment is placed on top, and then the crown is attached.

In some cases, patients may need additional procedures to effectively prep the area for the dental implant surgery. For instance, you may need a bone graft to restore the jaw bone mass if your tooth has been missing for a long time, or a sinus lift to make sure the post doesn’t interact with the sinuses.

How Long Does the Procedure Usually Take?

It can take around 6 months or more for the dental implant procedure to be over. While the time you spend in the dentist’s chair isn’t that long, you will need to go through a healing period called osseointegration.

During this time, the jaw bone and metal post will fuse and give the implant the proper hold it needs for the other elements to be attached. Osseointegration can take even as much as 6 months.

Additionally, if you need other procedures like bone grafts or a sinus lift, your dental implant timeline will extend, as you will need additional time to heal after these surgeries as well.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implant Surgery?

If you are generally healthy and don’t have other pressing oral health concerns, you’re most likely a great candidate for dental implants.

However, the only way to know for sure is to check with an oral surgeon. They will review your case and medical history in order to create the best course of treatment for you.
